<abstract>
This dataset contains all public roads from Aitkin, Beltrami, Cass, Hubbard, Itasca, and Koochiching counties, and all Forest Service Roads and Trails within the proclamation boundary of the Chippewa National Forest.
Original linework was derived from state-wide data from the Minnesota Department of Transportation, and from Forest Service Cartographic Feature Files. However, these original sources have been highly refined and edited. See the Data Quality section for more details.
The coverage contains two main feature classes - arcs and routes. the arcs (.aat) contain all the roads and the majority of the attributes, while the routes (.ratroad) concentrate on Forest Service roads and have few attributes. However, the route file contains links (RTE_CN, BMP, and EMP) to the FS INFRA application which contains a great deal more information about Forest Service roads.

<complete>In general, the travel_route layer is complete for public roads in the six-county area, and Forest Service roads within the proclamation boundary of the Chippewa National Forest. However, some data is inevitably out of date or missing. The layer undergoes continuous updates to improve accuracy and completeness, although Forest Service road data are more aggressively maintained than other roads. Private and city road data, in particular, are not well-maintained, since they are least useful to the mission of the Forest.</complete>

<procstep>
<procdesc>The original data were derived from Cartographic Feature Files (roads within all quadrangles within or partially within the Forest) in 1995. At this time, an effort was made to update the FS Primary Base Series maps, and thus the CFF's and the roads data. Later, a need was identified for roads data across a greater extent, and Mn/DOT data (general roads for 6 counties) was incorporated in 2001. Many updates have been made to both location and attribute data since the original data collection. Location sources include GPS data, digitizing from DOQ's, and updates from state, county, or other agency sources. Sources of attribute data include the original Mn/DOT layer, a roads inventory conducted by the Forest Service in 1999, the FS INFRA application, FS TIS (Transportation Inventory System, precursor to INFRA), and other sources.</procdesc>

<overview>
<eaover>Only a few attributes are required by the Forest Service GIS Core Data Dictionary. Other attribute data were derived from the Mn/DOT layer, a roads inventory conducted by the Forest Service in 1999, the FS INFRA application, FS TIS (Transportation Inventory System, precursor to INFRA), and other sources (see Definition Source for each attribute in the Detailed Description). More information is available in the INFRA Travel Routes National Application. The field RTE_CN is used as a unique identifier which links to the INFRA database. The BMP and EMP attributes also assist in accessing INFRA data.</eaover>
